Bile salt constitutes pure substances, sodium conjugates of glycotaurocholate, and those are used as selective agents mainly to inhibit gram-positive organisms, non-intestinal organisms and spore formers while permitting the growth of gram-negative enterics. Bile salt inhibits Enterococcus and Staphylococcus species.
